We are now ready to create the master, batch action. Close the image just used to build the action, Single. Make sure the required action set - Build Example, in our case - is selected. Click the new action icon and start recording the master action - called "Batch" in this illustration; execute the following commands:

  1. File>Open - pick any file that is not important
  2. Highlight the newly-created Single action, and press the "play" button (to the right of record)
  3. File>Save As - it doesn't matter what name you use
  4. File>Close

Open the Actions tab and stop recording. You should see something like this (I've expanded all the action statements):

The actions can now be used on batches of images. How to do this is explained in the article Using File>Automate.

Although, it is not strictly necessary to use File>Open and File>Save commands when running actions in batch mode, I prefer to explicitly define these commands because it avoids confusion and, more importantly, lets me save processed files to a destination folder different from the source, thus avoiding the potential catastrophe of over-writing the original files. Although actions are not the ideal tool, with a little thought and effort quite sophisticated workflow systems can be created.
