Didn't manage to read all the manual before falling asleep last night, but finally turned on the 10D this morning. Went through the menu and custom functions choosing preferred settings. I have to play with the camera a while before finalising my choice: I'm starting out with raw and large/fine JPG. I've seen one or two grumbles about the "flimsy" back wheel, but it seems perfectly OK to me: it is slightly smaller and doesn't click from position to position with quite the same firmness.

I have two 1gb microdrives, so I set numbering to auto-reset and inserted and formatted both cards in the camera, and reset numbering to continuous hoping that will start the counter of at CRW_0001, which indeed it does.

Nipped into the back garden and have taken a grand total of 5 shots. The shutter sound seems a bit quieter than my memory of the D30 and has a reassuring thunk that is quite nice. The LCD review is very clear, despite the fact that I've turned down the setting one notch from the default. I haven't changed the metering or focus points from standard settings. The in-focus indication is nice, but doesn't always seem to lock on the main subject — clearly some reading of chapters 4 and 5 in the manual is required.

I stuck the CF into the reader and started Downloader, which performs exactly as expected, which is a relief. I haven't been following the exchanges in the support forum closely, and wasn't 100% certain that 10D owners weren't experiencing some problems. I converted all the images with BreezeBrowser and hoo boy, was it slow! Oops, just loaded the first image into Photoshop and realised that the last time I used BB, I'd being creating downsized versions of some old images and had post-processing still checked. eek Reconverted the files and got a much more sensible result.

Well, here it is the very first picture I took with my 10D. Can't say, I was instantly bowled over; I realised it was actually quite a tricky shot as the camellia was almost backlit by the mid-morning sun. and really some fill-flash was needed. My patched copy of Camera Raw seems to work, but the default settings with AWB gave quite different results from BB.
The First Picture

Having looked at the other pictures, I conclude that a raw workflow won't be a straight copy from D30 processes and that the 10D metering doesn't seem to behave in quite the same that the D30 did. Time to read up about metering and focus points.
