We travelled by boat from Guilin to Yangshuo. The river is part of another candidate site for UNESCO World Heritage status. The Chinese poet, Han Yu, described the landscape:
The river forms a green gauze belt, the mountains are like blue jade hairpins.
Well, the water is greenish and murky, and I can only suppose that the blue jade mountains means the haze was just as bad then. Most of my shots of the limestone peaks aren't usable because they are too hazy. The journey does take around 5 hours; so there are one or two where the air is clear enough and the sky is blueish. There's plenty of activity on the river where people live and work, not to mention, the seemingless endless stream of boats of all sizes carrying tourists.
