One of the ports of call on our recent cruise round Cape Horn was Puerto Montt in Chile. This is not far from the Chilean Lake District. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. We hired a local taxi driver in Puerto Montt and drove to the Petrohué Falls in the Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales. We drove through Puerto Varas on the shores of Lago Llanquihue to the park with the spectacular perfection of the Volcán Osorno almost always in view.

The only blight on the day was the swarms of local flies, which were large and voracious. They were almost as large as one of my thumb knuckles! Apparently, they didn't give you anything nasty, but when you got bitten, you definitely felt it.
