These few images are taken from a day trip to Rye Harbour on 29 Jul '02. I went with my mother, Nina, and brother, Jeremy, despite the fact that he's a Nikon shooter and still uses film. It was one of those hot, slightly muggy summer days that we don't get enough of in England, and consequently, don't handle very well when they do occur. Frustratingly, the tide was in during the afternoon we spent there, so we were denied the opportunity to make too many of those "boats on mud" images that we were after.

There is a Local Nature Reserve encompassed within the Rye Harbour area, which, because of the diversity of habitats, has a large number of different species, including a number of rare and endangered plants.

One thing that the excursion did prove was that the EF100-400 - superb though it is - is simply not long enough, most of the time, for decent bird pictures; you can't get close enough. Oh well, roll on the extenders. Still I did come up with one technique, shoot a bird with a reflection, so you get a "double-sized" subject.
